A flag with the Eloise logo outside The Plaza Hotel in New York promotes the Eloise shop, which opened at the hotel Dec. 1, 2009. The shop is a tribute to the legendary storybook character who lived at The Plaza. The "Eloise" books were written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. (Courtesy Evan Sung)
The Plaza Hotel is now offering an Eloise Suite, designed by fashion designer Betsey Johnson. Channeling the ebullient spirit of the Plaza's most famous "resident," Eloise, the irreverent and irrepressible fictional heroine of Kay Thompson's classic book, the $995-a-night suite is every kid's dream. Rates for the Eloise Suite start at $995 a night and include a monogrammed Eloise bathrobe, a $100 gift card to the Eloise shop, an Eloise camera, a framed photo of the guest inside the suite and an Eloise book. Guests also have the option to book an adjoining 'grown-up' Edwardian Suite, which includes both champagne and truffles. Rates start at $2,045 a night for this two-bedroom option. Eloise's suite is located on the 18th floor and is comprised of two rooms -- one for erstwhile young Eloises and one for their parents. The Suite is rendered in an Eloise-approved palette of pink and black, and a signature Plaza chandelier fitted with pink bulbs casts a rosy glow throughout. Wall panels are candy striped with pink and white and outlined with gold leaf molding providing a striking contrast to the black and white zebra-print carpet which muffles the sound when Eloise slomps her skates to "make a really loud and terrible racket." In the spring, this tea room will be open for tea parties, like those Eloise is known for having. Parents will be able to reserve space for birthday parties and get-togethers. Etiquette classes are coming, too, according to Kristin Franzese, executive vice president of retail at The Plaza Hotel, who was part of the team that created the store. (Courtesy Evan Sung)
Various merchandise items, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and tutus, are available at the Eloise shop. Children can close the curtains at the podium for privacy while trying on clothes in the shop. (Courtesy Evan Sung)

The plates in the Tea Party room were specially designed by a local artist, but many people have expressed interest in purchasing similar ones. As a result, Kristin Franzese, executive vice president of retail at The Plaza Hotel, is working with the artist to determine their value. (Courtesy Evan Sung)
On the wall of the main room hangs a portrait of Eloise, painted by a local artist, which was designed as a replica of the one that appears in The Plaza Hotel's lobby. That one was painted by the "Eloise" books' illustrator Hilary Knight. (Courtesy Evan Sung)
