5 Style & Beauty Lessons You Can Learn From Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie has come a long way from being Paris Hilton's bad girl BFF. These days, the mother-of-two is best known for her signature boho-chic style. In addition to designing for her House of Harlow accessories collection and Winter Kate clothing line, her sartorial sense recently earned her a spot as a judge on the upcoming NBC reality series, Fashion Star. In honor of Richie's 30th birthday, here are the top five ways to emulate her look.
1. Go for comfort and style. Though she always looks put-together, Richie insists it's more about feeling good than keeping up with the trends. "Comfort takes precedence for me," she has said. "All the shoes I design have a cushion and a platform."
2. Stock up on shades. The star has admitted to owning more than 200 pairs of sunglasses. "But in my defense," she told Teen Vogue, "I make sunglasses, so I have to research-shop, and I own every pair I've ever designed." The designer views sunglasses as "fun masks to accessorize your face."
3. Build on the basics. When she's not wearing a killer gown on the red carpet, Richie's go-to outfit is jeans and a tee, "But you change the look with accessories," she shares. "And by accessories, I mean sunglasses, head scarves, shoes and bed jackets."
4. Experiment with your hair. When Richie debuted a dark brown color in December 2009, she told Us Weekly she did it because she was "ready for a change." "I change my hair color all the time, and I hadn't done it in a few years," she said. "With the babies, I just really hadn't had time. I'm so used to having that change all the time, and I hadn't done it in about two years, so I was just ready and sick of being blonde!"

Target pledges restock after Missoni stampede
US department store Target pledged Wednesday to restock some items from its cut-priced Missoni line, a day after online demand for the one-off collection sent its website crashing.
"Great news! Limited Missoni for Target items will be restocked by the end of the week!" the popular nationwide retailer said on its Twitter feed after the Internet stampede for the 400-piece line.
Several of them items -- all featuring the Italian knitwear brand's signature zigzag pattern -- were out of stock, from maxi dresses and sweater skirts to men's socks and ties, not to mention pencil cases and a bicycle.
Not a few pieces cropped up for resale on eBay by third parties.
Target's website (www.target.com) crashed on Tuesday shortly after Missoni for Target was unveiled both online and in stores. It was still faltering at times on Wednesday.
With much of the womenswear priced under $50, Missoni for Target appealed to fashion-conscious but thrifty shoppers eager to save money in hard economic times. Missoni dresses typically go for more than $1,000 at high-end stores.
"Our Missoni launch has created site traffic to rival Black Friday!" reported Target on Twitter overnight, alluding to the day after Thanksgiving, the traditional start in November of the Christmas shopping season -- one of the busiest sales days in the United States.

The following afternoon, actress Selma Blair ("Hellboy") attended the "Dark Horse" press conference at the Venice Film Fest in a fashion-forward Roland Mouret frock, which featured pleated detailing and short, draped sleeves. Accessories -- which included gray pumps and minimal jewels -- were kept simple in order to let the emerald-colored dress take center stage.

NY fashion experts say Middleton no trendsetter
NEW YORK (Reuters) - She has graced countless magazine covers and dresses sell out hours after she has worn them, but experts at New York Fashion Week say Britain's Kate Middleton is a style follower, not a trendsetter like her royal spouse's late mother Princess Diana.
Middleton has been compared and contrasted with Diana, whose style, charity and scandalous divorce from Prince Charles made her arguably the world's most famous woman.
When Middleton married Prince William in April, hundreds of millions of people around the world watched on television, eager to see the wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton for the British label Alexander McQueen.
Then during the a visit by the couple to Canada and the United States in July, all eyes were on Middleton's wardrobe.
"She is stylish, but she's not setting trends, she's following trends," said Gregg Andrews, a fashion director at U.S. department store chain Nordstrom.
"If you take Kate out of the royal family, put her on a street in New York, you wouldn't look at her twice. She's a beautiful woman, but she blends into a crowd," he said.
While experts debate her fashion status, they say there is no question that the new Duchess of Cambridge and wife of the person second in line to the British throne is influential.
"Is she a style icon of the likes of a Kate Moss? Absolutely not. Is she in the public eye? Are people going to become obsessed with everything she wears regardless of what it is? Yes," said Elle Fashion News Director Anne Slowey.
Much like U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, Middleton has been praised for wearing affordable Main Street labels.
A blue Issa crossover knee-length dress that she wore when her engagement to William was announced sold out within 24 hours and cheap knock-offs vanished almost instantly.

And the cream "Nannette" gown by British fashion retailer Reiss, which Middleton wore in the official engagement portraits, sold out several times over.
"Is she iconic at the moment? Time will tell. She's certainly influential. In the position that she's in you can't be simply stunning as she is and not have influence," said Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing.
While more polished lady-like looks have been shown at New York Fashion Week -- such as evening wear with sleeves -- some experts were not expecting to see many styles on the runway inspired by Middleton.
Almost 100 designers are showing collections for spring/summer 2012 to retail buyers, media and celebrities, with dozens more showing at other venues around the city to coincide with the semi-annual event, which ends on Thursday.
Saks Fifth Avenue Senior Fashion Director Colleen Sherin said Middleton's style could be aspirational for many women.
"She seems to be starting to experiment a bit, to try some different looks and some different designers which I like to see but also still remaining thoughtful and appropriate in her choices and that's the key to her success," she said.
Jill Martin, author of "I Have Nothing to Wear!", described Middleton's style as classic. "I think this spring you will see many brides walking down the aisle in dresses with sleeves and that will pay tribute to Kate," she said.
